Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Announces 2007 Charitable Donations

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF ILLINOIS ANNOUNCES 2007 CHARITABLE DONATIONS

Blue Cross promotes health and wellness through nearly $3.5 million in gifts supporting medical care for the uninsured, human services, education, and arts organizations in Illinois

Chicago (March 20, 2008) – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) provided nearly $3.5 million in funding to roughly 350 501(c)3 organizations in Illinois in 2007. In line with its new mission, "to promote the health and wellness of our members and communities through accessible, cost-effective, quality health care," BCBSIL's giving focused mostly on community-based organizations that provide hands-on health services to the uninsured. In addition, BCBSIL funded programs that provide human services and education programs to the underserved in communities throughout the state of Illinois, as well as several arts organizations.

"Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois is proud to support health and other much-needed services for those who may not have access otherwise," Paul Boulis, BCBSIL president, said. "Blue Cross plays an integral role in many aspects of Illinois' economy. We cover more than 4 million people here. We have a large network of contracting physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers. We have 8,000 employees in more than 20 facilities across the state. Our charitable giving program allows us to provide assistance to those we don’t touch every day."

Charitable funding makes a difference for organizations that receive grants and their communities:

"The generous donations the Community Health Care Clinic receives from Blue Cross and other organizations gives us the ability to provide care to more than 4,000 people in McLean County, who don't have alternatives for primary healthcare except our local emergency rooms," Shirley Drazewski, executive director, Bloomington, IL-based Community Health Care Clinic, said. "Blue Cross' grant was especially instrumental in providing diabetes supplies to hundreds of people in the Bloomington/Normal area."

Since 1936, BCBSIL has been committed to promoting the health and wellness of its members and its communities through accessible, cost-effective, quality health care.
