Encourage Clients to Start with Their Primary Care Provider

April 8, 2026

Applies to Individual & Family Markets

Remind your clients that their doctor, primary care provider, medical group or individual practice association should be their first line of care for most health needs. Establishing and using a PCP helps ensure coordinated care and typically results in lower out-of-pocket costs.

A doctor/PCP can help with:

  • Preventive services, screenings and tests
  • Sore throat, cough or cold and flu symptoms
  • UTI’s
  • Back or muscle pain
  • Minor fevers
  • Bumps, scratches or rashes
  • Respiratory infections

Emergency rooms should be reserved for serious or life-threatening situations. For non-emergency concerns, starting with a PCP can help clients avoid unnecessary ER visits and higher costs.

Encourage clients to confirm they have an in-network PCP and to establish care early in the year. You can also direct them to our care options page, which outlines additional in-network choices such as virtual care and urgent care. Providing clear guidance on where to seek care helps clients make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary emergency room visits.
