Member ID FAQs

​​If you enroll in an Individual and Family plan, you should get your member ID cards in the mail soon after your application is approved.

PPO members will receive no more than 2 member ID cards for a household. HMO Individual and Family plans will get a card for each member enrolled.

Remember that all member ID cards show only the subscriber’s name, but they can be used by all dependents enrolled under the policy. 

​If you need a member ID card today for an appointment or pharmacy visit, you can download and print a copy of your digital member ID card by logging in to your online account.

All member ID cards only have the subscriber’s name on them. They can be used by all dependents enrolled under the policy, including spouses.

You present your member ID card each time you visit your doctor, a hospital, a pharmacy or other services. Watch this video to learn more.

Your member ID number and group number are used by providers and pharmacies to verify your coverage. Both numbers can be found on your member ID card.  

While at your doctor’s office or pharmacy, you may need your member ID card to check in for your visit. The staff may make a copy of it for their files. 

Better yet, share your digital member ID card by logging into your online account: 

• In your dashboard, tap the Member ID Card icon. 
• Done! You’re now seeing your digital member ID card. 
• If you need to provide verification of coverage, you can do this as well. Tap the share icon in the top right corner of your screen and select “Share Verification of Coverage.” This generates an email you can send to your doctor or pharmacy.

Your trusty smartphone can now safely store your health information through our mobile app. It can:

• Find insurance benefits
• Use favorite payment methods
• Access your digital ID member card

You can also download your digital member ID card to your mobile device’s wallet. This option gives you access to it, even if you don’t have good reception or an internet connection.

To download the card to your wallet, tap on the member ID card icon from the mobile app. Then click on the download icon at the top right corner to add it to our mobile wallet. To share from the mobile wallet to your provider, tap the share icon.

If you have an Individual and Family plan, BCBSIL will send you a welcome letter including your member ID number and group number soon after your application is accepted. These numbers are used by providers and pharmacies to verify your coverage until you get your member ID card. 
 
If you have the BCBSIL mobile app downloaded on your phone, you can also find it there. Click on the member ID card icon and it will open an image with the numbers listed.

You don’t have to worry if your card is lost or misplaced. We’re here to help. 

If your card is lost or you don’t receive it, you can access it from your online account or print out a temporary card. To print a temporary card:

• Log in to your online account.
• If you don’t have a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois account, it’s easy to register. The site walks you through simple steps to create your account. Have your group and member numbers handy to register.
• Once you’re logged in, click the “Member ID Card” button from the dashboard.

If you get a new member ID card every plan year and haven’t gotten your new card yet, you can access it from your mobile device by logging into your account from bcbsil.com or by using the BCBSIL mobile app.

Yes, you can. Your coverage information is in the palm of your hand.  

• Where did I put my health insurance card?

All these questions and many others can be answered on the go. Your digital member ID card is in the upper left corner of the mobile app. Just click the icon to open the card.

The only way to request a new BCBSIL ID card without logging into your online account is to call the Customer Service number listed on your member ID card.

No. Most often, prescriptions are covered by your medical plan, so you will use your BCBSIL medical member ID card when you go to the pharmacy.

Because dental, vision and medical benefits are separate plans, you may have separate member ID cards for dental and vision.
