Self-Employed

Who can get health insurance without an employer?

Almost anyone who doesn't get health insurance through their job can enroll in an individual and family health insurance plan. BCBSIL can help if you're:

  • A gig worker, like a food delivery or rideshare driver
  • An independent contractor with a company, on your own (like some lawyers or doctors) or don't get health insurance as a benefit through work
  • A freelance worker, like copywriters or graphic designers
  • A small business owner, like a marketing agency owner, event planner or any small business owner that doesn't offer employer coverage

Start thinking ahead for 2026. During Open Enrollment, starting Nov. 1, you can keep the BCBSIL plan you have now or find new coverage.
